Join us at Gallatin River Lodge, surrounded by majestic mountain peaks and blue-ribbon waters, to build your very own custom bamboo fly rod against the backdrop of Big Sky Country.

This exclusive collaboration between Gallatin River Lodge and Proof Fly Fishing provides participants with the opportunity to build their own custom bamboo fly rod under the expert guidance of Proof Fly Fishing’s Founder, Matt Draft. Starting with a bamboo blank that has been hand-crafted in Virginia, this four-day workshop offers an unforgettable combination of craftsmanship and adventure, culminating in a guided fishing trip. Guests will depart with an heirloom-quality custom bamboo fly rod.

This is an all-inclusive experience. Retreat amenities include:

  • One hour pre-retreat design consultation with Matt Draft to begin the rod-building process;
  • Four nights of accommodation at the Gallatin River Lodge;
  • Farm-to-table cuisine, including all breakfasts, lunches, and dinners;
  • American-made rod-building components provided by Proof Fly Fishing;
  • A one-day guided fly-fishing trip with a local outfitter (2 person minimum for boat trips).

Schedule:

Wednesday, October 1 – Arrive at the Lodge for check in at 3pm. Join us for a dinner banquet and hosted welcome reception in the Lodge’s Library.

Thursday, October 2 –Embark on your rod-building journey by sealing and polishing your bamboo blank.  Select and install the grip and reel seat; conclude by marking out the guide placements on your blank. Enjoy lunch at your leisure on property and close your day with a refined mountain-west dinner overlooking the open pasture.

Friday, October 3 – Learn how to wrap guides under Matt Draft’s expert guidance.  Start with a few test wraps to get your technique perfected and then move on to wrapping each guide and ferrule. Lunch is at your leisure on property, and dinner will feature an outdoor Montana BBQ (weather permitting).

Saturday, October 4 – Apply sealant and, while your rod dries, head out for a day of adventure on the water with our local guides. Lunch is on the river; return to the Lodge for a sunset dinner to celebrate a job well done.
